I feel that i am about 10 years late to this party! After hearing fantastic things about this book from a friend i decided it was finally time to cave and buy the book! For the most part of this book i enjoyed it, especially how relatable Cath's character was and how she would rather stay in writing her fanfiction than go out and get drunk like her twin sister Wren.
Fangirl is a story of an 18 year old girl named Cath who is about to embark on the journey of college, along with her twin sister Wren. Cath and Wren are polar opposites, Cath would rather be writing Simon Snow fanfiction in her room whereas Wren prefers going out with her friends, getting drunk and having the typical college experience! Cath is placed in a room with Reagan who isn't the friendliest of characters and her presumed boyfriend is constantly coming to their room, much to Cath's confusion. The story shows Cath slowly realising that the world outside of her laptop may not be as bad as it seems!
The characterisation in this novel was certainly different to your typical ya romance books. Cath's character although seemingly just quirky posed some issues for me as at certain points her awkwardness became too much and verged on seeming rude, particularly when she was around Levi. However, i did enjoy the comedic relationship between her and Reagan as we saw their friendship slowly blossom from avoiding each other at all costs to becoming friends, one of my favourite moments being when Reagan forced Cath to go to lunch with her.
One of my favourite elements of the book was when Cath would read to Levi. She seemed to only fully open up when she was reading to him as she was able to get lost in whatever she was reading at the time. It also allowed the reader to see Levi's vulnerability as he often came across as a closed book at many times.
Overall, i really enjoyed this book and found it to be a pleasant, easy read. The characters were different from anything that i had experienced before which made it an interesting read. 3/5 stars from me!
